The clinical efficacy of Cefuroxime axetil in the treatiment of acute sinusitis

Abstract
Cefuroxime axetil, an orally abosorbed prodrug of cefuroxime, was evaluated for its clinical and bacteriological efficacy ¢¥in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis and acute exacerbation of chronic maxillary sinusitis. A total of 30 patients aged 14 or over who had symptoms - of acute maxillary sinusitis or acute exacerbation were enrolled. in ¢¥this study and received cefuroxime axetil 250mg twice daily for 7 days.
Of the thirty patients treated with cefuroxime axetil, 10 (33.3%) were cured and 18 (60%) improved (93.3% success rate) without relapse. All thirty patients had rhinorrhea and were evaluated for bacteriological response. Twenty four patients had causative organisms and all of these were sensitive to cefuroxime axetil. Two out of 30 patients experienced drug-related adverse events such as nausea and vomiting, which were mild and disappeared immediately after drug discontinuation.
In conclusion, cefuroxime axetil at a dose of 250mg b.d. appears too be effective and safe in the treatment of acute paranasal sinusitis or acute exacerbation of chronic paranasal sinusitis.
